PLEASE DON'T SLEEP - Tia

I know some of y'all looked at the video with a side eye and thought, "JoJo? That little Leave(Get Out) girl?"

Yes...HER. JoJo is back on the scene after a much too long hiatus. Her last album, The High Road, was released back in 2006 and charted well with the help of the platinum selling single Too Little, Too Late. But then it was like she fell off the face of the earth. She would randomly pop up in television and movie appearances and I would find myself wondering why she wasn't singing.

I was briefly hopeful when a cover of Drake's Houstatlantavegas popped up on the interwebs.

But then rumors of label disputes dashed any remaining hopes that I may have had for hearing an album any time soon. So you can imagine my surprise and delight when I heard that there was a completely free mixtape dropping this month. After a little digging I found it at rap-up.com. And I must say that not only did JoJo grow up but she had the nerve to get grimey on us.

Apparently getting into a label dispute, breaking up with your boyfriend and life in general will make you write a banging album. If you're one of those people who couldn't appreciate JoJo's vocals because of the material she was singing about, then you should definitely give the Can't Take That Away From Me album a listen. But I'm going to tell you right now, DO NOT call your ex and leave "Boy Without a Heart" on his voicemail. That's just tacky and you don't want to be that girl. (But TRUST I thought about doing it....) But feel free to do the gospel double clap to it. My favorite track of the moment is When Does It Go Away with Travis Garland. It is so No Air it's not funny. But overall, the whole album shows a more mature artist who has definitely learned a thing or two about life, love and the music industry since the last time we saw her.

I'm glad to see JoJo is back and free to do the kind of music that she likes. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I don't want gimmicks with my music. (Looking at you Gaga) I just want you to sing. (Still looking at you Gaga...you can sing....but I forget because I'm too distracted by the animal carcasses you wear.) I don't need a lot of extra. I just want well produced tracks and good vocals. Apparently that is just too much to ask these days. But at least there are a few people out there who still just want to be musicians. Those are the people I'll support. (Looking at you JoJo.)

This mixtape is everything to me! I've had it on repeat since downloading two weeks ago.

How did you download it for free? It says that you can. But when I click on it, there is a $5 fee that comes up. Is it no longer free? Just checkin before I pay $5 for it.

I guess it's not free anymore. I went and looked at the site. I'm not sure when they started charging for it.

She has a website somewhere besides the jojoonline.com but I'm having some trouble locating it.

Go'on little Joanna Levesque! LOL She is really surprising me with this one. I liked "Get Out" & "Too Little Too Late" but that was kid stuff compared to what she's doing now. I'm feeling this!

My fave track right off the bat is "Running On Empty". I listened to that song 20 times at work today. I love the Prince-esque guitar and the uptempo dance groove and JoJo's sassy vocals.

I am going to go ahead and listen to this. I liked her kiddy music as well.

Thank you Tia!! You caught me slippin' 'cause I didn't know a thing about this. I've just started listening to it, but I'm feelin' it already. Oh, and "kiddy music" or not, I still keep her first album on my mp3 and I'm 31.

Loved it. And how did I know my favorite blogger duo would be on it, too?! "Boy Without A Heart" is crazy eerie. Nailed human emotion on wax. (I contemplated @ing the ex on twitter but knew that would be passe' and tacky.) LOL

Aww man, the song I can't stop playing is "why didn't you call". That track is banging! That can be a first hit single, video directed by Hype williams, everything! Love that mixtape, and she has grown into herself so well. You go Jojo!
