They fixed the video AND I got my 2000+ votes back!!! -Toya

Why do I have a feeling that someone besides me notified them about the technical difficulties? *Shrug*

If you would like to still vote for me to get my own talk show on Oprah's OWN Network, I sure would love it. Also, if I do make it to past the semi-finals, there is a reality show portion. Oh I will need prayer FOR REAL. But for now, let's just see what happens. Thanks for your votes everyone! Click here to view my video entry and to vote.
So About That Whole Shaving My Head and Heading to Europe Thing...-Toya

So my link for my video entry for Oprah's "Your OWN Show" contest stopped working AGAIN. Yup. It appears as if they took the video down and made it impossible to vote on possibly because I had two profiles. The reason why I had two profiles was because the video on the first one stopped working and no one from their tech support would get back to me.So now you can vote on my old profile but you can't view the video.

*blank stare*

I will say this: I am glad that this whole endeavor has helped me to be more creative and dream about the shows I would like to create. I never really wanted to be in front of the camera, but I think it could be fun. Music has always been my thing but you know what, record labels are a dead end right now as far as employment goes. Sometimes when what you want to do is not working, you need to consider other options. It's a big world out there. You can probably do more than you think. So my plan now is, get a flip cam, get a second job, and get a Youtube channel. My creativity doesn't have to stop flowing because this may not work out. Life is good. We shall see.

Maybe I can get a travel show that's kind of like "Eat. Pray. Love." Single black woman in her mid-thirties forgoes the drama, cuts her hair off to the new growth and starts over in South Africa. Who knows?

Open Letter to Coury Palermo - Tia

Dear Coury,

As one of my oldest friends I feel the need to write you a letter this morning to simply say NO!!!!

Sir....SIR....While I have and always will be a huge fan of your music, I do not appreciate you trying to destroy me first thing in the morning. After a heat stroke inducing walk in the Nashville sun, the last thing I needed to come back to is a video of you singing like you do, looking like you do, trying to destroy me and the rest of the world in a fashion that only you can. I do not appreciate it.

You know you write music to curl up in a ball and weep to....But now you want to give us a visual aid as well....? NO SIR!!!! I have just five words for you: IN AP PRO PRI ATE!!!!!

At the very least, please put some sort of disclaimer at the beginning of the video: Video may induce tears, hysteria and the need to curl up in the corner and rock for several minutes.

With that said, the video is beautiful, you are ten different kinds of fine, and I'm so proud of you.

OWN Audition Video Malfunctioning- Toya

Hey everyone! Thanks for voting for me so far for me to get my own show on the OWN Network. Unfortunately, something funky happened to my audition page and my views went to zero. Also, the video won't load. I pray they fix it soon. When it is fixed, I will let everyone know. Thanks again!

Help Toya Get Her Own Show on Oprah's OWN Network!

Last Saturday I got an email from my mother. She had forwarded me an email from a girl I grew up with that was entering Oprah’s “Your OWN Show” contest which I knew nothing about. I dismissed it as soon as she suggested I do it but then I got to the last line of the email…

“Do it for me”.

How many of you know that when it comes to your mom, that is the trump card? I have always been told that I should be on TV but I have always opted for behind the scenes. I LIVE for behind the scenes. But after I made my mom go through BET’s Sunday Best auditions last year (she made it to second place online) I figured it would be wrong if I didn’t at least try. So this past Sunday, with a few very supportive friends, I did that. Just try. TRUST I tried to see if I could submit a show with more than one host so Tia and I could get a show together but that is against the rules.

The name of my show is called “You Can Do It Too” and it features people that are living out their passions and interests through their dream jobs. It is my hope that this show will inspire people, particularly in my generation, that aren’t too sure why they are here. For instance, you may like fashion but you may not want to be a model or a designer. There are plenty of careers out there that people don’t know about in the fashion world. It sometimes just takes seeing someone doing what you don’t know can be done for you to step out and try.

So please, please, please, vote for me..and as often as you’d like. And if you would like to tell a few friends, I wouldn't mind that either. What started out as something I was doing for my mom has turned into something I can’t wait to do again, and again and again. Here is the link to my audition:

Thanks everyone in advance for voting for me and helping me live my dream of helping others realize theirs.

Soooo....Guess Who is Entering Oprah's "Your OWN Show" Contest?

Me (Toya)! After years of being told that I need to be on television, urging from my mother and countless comparisons to Oprah, I have decided to throw my knit beanie cap in the ring and enter Oprah's "Your OWN Show" contest for the next talk show star. The above picture was taken at Fanny's House of Music and Vintage Clothes in East Nashville which is where we filmed my contest entry. I'll have some details for you all really soon.

Happy Birthday Prince!!!!- Toya

I mean, he is bad for no reason!!!! No reason at ALL. This is the only man I would marry that I would allow to be prettier than me. You can’t upgrade this, I’m sorry. Prince has given us so much timeless music and is the blueprint for longevity and musical integrity. I thank him for this. In honor of his birthday, here are my top 10 favorite Prince songs of all time. God bless you today, Mr. Nelson.

1. When 2 R In Love- Some random personal fact about me: I have a CD of songs that as a single woman is umm....well set aside until the time is right and that time will be no sooner than my wedding day. With that said, there is definitely some Prince on there. This song was one of the first added.

2. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker- There is a part in this song, about the second verse, that I rewind at least 6 times whenever I listen to it. This song is all around clever.

3. Crazy U- I think this song is less than 3 minutes long. It's very sweet.

4. Housequake- I was having a not so hot day a few days ago and Michael Baisden played it out the blue. No warning, nothing. I have no idea what I was upset about. I don't even want to know how I looked to the people driving around me cause I went absolutely nuts.

5. Adore- Obviously.

6. Pop Life- I remember almost running up and smacking a DJ upside the head for playing this one night. This song is always on time.

7. Alphabet Street- Instant happiness.

8. Girls and Boys- Under the Cherry Moon may be one of the most ridiculous movies ever made (Wrecka Stow) but it yielded some of my favorite songs. This is one of them.

9. Anotherloverholeinyahead- Another song off of Under the Cherry Moon that I love.

10. Slow Love- Refer to #1

Honorable mention: Untitled (How Does It Feel)-D'Angelo. The best song Prince never wrote.

Those are my ten! What are yours?

STOP THE PRESSES: Arty Was in a BOY BAND?!- Toya

First of all, how did WE miss a BOY BAND? ANY boy band? Am I the only one that has never heard of NLT?

I just started to watch Glee (the Madonna episode hooked me) and a friend of mine hipped me to this. I don't know what's harder to wrap my mind around, Arty with boy band moves and metro hair or Wheelchair Jimmy from Degrassi becoming the "golden boy of hip hop".

It boggles the mind.-

For those that have let bygones be bygones, here is the new one from John Mayer "Half of My Heart" featuring Taylor Swift. "Say" what you wanna say, I love it.-Toya

Ramblings, Updates and Stuff - Tia
Well here we are again. Just when you think I've fallen off the face of the earth I come stomping back in with news and updates and all that jazz. As I sit here waiting patiently for the FedEx guy, I figured I would fill you in (i.e ramble on until I get bored) about stuff I like and stuff that's going on. So let's begin.

- As of tomorrow I officially live in Nashville. NYC was NOT IT for me. The great job that I had turned into part time work. And part time work in the city does not cut it...PERIOD. And call me selfish or whatever, but I WISH I would work 3 jobs to live in a city that I don't really like. Don't get me wrong. NYC is a great place to visit. But (insert Big Pun's It's So Hard here) it was just too hard for me. The people are so HARSH. Driving is a constant test of patience and grace. And that winter almost killed me. I walked outside after it snowed 14 inches and just started cursing. So after some prayer and searching I realized that my heart was really back in the south, closer to my family and friends. Closer to Wal-marts and people who say y'all. I welcome the humidity and giant insects with open arms.

Joking aside, one of the main reasons for wanting to move back to Nashville is so that I can get a handle on my destiny. For the last 4 years, I've felt like I was doing nothing more than existing. Running this way and that with no direction. I realized that I want my days to count for something. I want to make an impact on the world around me. And frankly, I don't want to have to do that while worrying about how I'm going to make it to job number 3 so that I can have enough money to eat AND pay rent. So I'm basically taking a time out if you will. While I will be working and traveling, at the end of the day I will be coming HOME. And my prayer is that in those times of being home and being settled I can begin to see what it is that I was expressly designed to do. So this is definitely a To Be Continued story....But just as an aside, the Lord would have to part the clouds and skywrite with his sovereign hand to get me to move again. I'm sooooooo over moving I don't know what to do.

- Apparently black women are the problem
For every article I've read recently about black women being their own problem, there are probably a dozen more. The general consensus is that black women are too much and not enough at the same time. We spend too much time on our careers. But don't contribute enough to the household. We're too independent and not strong enough. We need to know our place, sit down and shut up. UGH!!!!

I'm BEYOND over it. So basically I should work a job that's below my caliber, style myself in some old fashioned way, keep my mouth shut, keep my home tidy, not be funny, keep my figure tight, have no opinion and THEN I can hope to have a man.....Survey says XXX.
Here's the thing: I'm awesome. As TWIB said, I manufacture AWESOME. I'm not going to change that to find a man. And frankly, if I some man wants me to change to be with him he's clearly not man enough to stand by my side.

Of course I want to get married and have a couple of babies...but at what cost. If I can't be me and have those things then I'll just be me without them. I can't change who I am. Well, I could. But I don't want to...If I change the factory I may not be able to manufacture the AWESOME anymore.
Here's a great article on This Week In Blackness that sums up some fantastic points.

- Summer Traditions
I know some of you have traditions that officially jump start your summer. Maybe it's a BBQ on Memorial Day or a trip to the beach. For me the summer officially begins when I get my first sew in. That's right, I start my summer with WEAVE. (Before you ask, YES, I saw Good Hair.)

I spend almost EVERY Saturday by the pool. As one who rocks natural hair, sun, heat, humidity and the pool do not do much for my natural press. I will sweat out a press faster than you can heat up your CHI. So in order to spend the least amount of time doing my hair and the most amount of time by the pool, I go from this
to this at the beginning of every summer.
It's like a Christmas (in July) miracle. (My brother has asked me to stop Blue Steeling it up in every photo. I simply can't...and won't.)

- I should be embarrassed...
but I'm not. I somehow got sucked into watching Gossip Girl a few weeks ago. It was that Chuck Bass person. I was utterly intrigued by how heartless he seemed to be. I couldn't believe that anyone could willfully act that way. And as it was the season finale, I now have this itching, almost uncontrollable urge to see the episodes that preceded it. Like I said, I should be embarrassed, but I'm really not.

- My dream job
Everyone has a dream job. Mine is to be the person who selects the music for television shows. I'm not sure what the title of that job is but if anyone knows, please hit me up.

I am constantly intrigued by the songs that I discover while watching one of my favorite shows. I think Bones may be the best. I usually keep my phone in my hand, with the Shazam app open while watching it because that show consistently plays something that I immediately fall in love with and must have.

Thanks to the season finale I am helplessly in love with One Eskimo. Their take on Candi Staton's He Called Me Baby is RIDICULOUS.

And it's songs like this that make me want to be the person who gets to choose the songs like these that touch people like me.

I have more to say but I must now call FedEx and make someone go find my package.

Eat, Pray, Love Trailer Starring Julia Roberts

Yup. This trailer (minus the husband) sums up how I feel about wanting to break camp and see the world. Lord let it be.- Toya
