Songs in the Key of Life- Toya

I got laid off today.
I am ecstatic!

No seriously. Now mind you I LOVE where I work. LOVE it. My co-workers are a second family to me.  But I seriously have been feeling restless in comfortability.  I loved where I work but the work itself was seeming less and less significant. Turns out I was right and they cut my department.

I have mentioned before that God speaks to me often through songs. Music plays all around me but sometimes something will catch me in a way that grabs my attention or some lyrics will play over and over in my head and I am forced to find the lyrics to the whole song.  There have been a few that have been swimming in my head and now I know why.

I have been thinking about and hearing messages about the exciting life that God wants for us. In doing so. I have been paying attention to my desires and aching for something more adventurous. I told someone the other day that I want to be married but in no way am I looking to settle down and don't want to be committed to anyone that wants to settle down anytime soon either.  Then today, I heard this:

"Saddle up your horses"...

This lyric is from Steven Curtis Chapman's "The Great Adventure". I haven't heard this song in years. Here are the lyrics:

Saddle up your horses

Started out this morning in the usual way
Chasing thoughts inside my head of all I had to do today
Another time around the circle try to make it better than the last

I opened up the Bible and I read about me
Said I'd been a prisoner and God's grace had set me free
And somewhere between the pages it hit me like a lightning bolt
I saw a big frontier in front of me and I heard somebody say "let's go"!

Saddle up your horses we've got a trail to blaze
Through the wild blue yonder of God's amazing grace
Let's follow our leader into the glorious unknown
This is a life like no other - this is The Great Adventure

Come on get ready for the ride of your life
Gonna leave long faced religion in a cloud of dust behind
And discover all the new horizons just waiting to be explored
This is what we were created for

We'll travel over, over mountains so high
We'll go through valleys below
Still through it all we'll find that
This is the greatest journey that the human heart will ever see
The love of God will take us far beyond our wildest dreams

Yeah... oh saddle up your horses... come on get ready to ride

You can scream coincidence all day long but I know that I know that I know that this has been the cry of my heart for weeks now and this morning at my desk it came to a head. I knew something was fishy when I heard Justin Timberlake's "Take It From Here" but I decided to sit and be depressed.  I just was getting restless, wishing for something more. I felt like David Byrne in "Once in a Lifetime" where he says "This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife. How did I get here? My God what have I done?"  My life can no longer be spent by spending a third of my day everyday doing something that in now way pertains to my career. So after 2 Diet Cokes, daydreams about NYC in the fall, and torturing myself by listening to UK radio on line, I went to the bathroom at work.  Funny enough, I knew I had reason to believe that eventually I may be let go. Didn't think it would be today.  My HR person met me outside the door and asked me to come into the conference room.

My boss began. "You are our favorite person here. You've done nothing wrong. In fact, it's everything but you. This is so hard."  Everything after that just started to run together.  They assured me that I would have enough pay and any recommendation letter I needed. I kind of remember but I kind of don't. I was trying too hard to hide my excitement. Maybe I couldn't hear them above the horses galloping.

So I got home, talked to a friend of mine and decided that I needed some time alone to think.  I desperately wanted to pray about all that has happened and was hoping to maybe shut up long enough to perhaps listen to what God has to say. And then this song, that I have never really known the words to, started playing in my head:

"The Light in Your Eyes"- Sheryl Crow

Something is happening
Everything's different but everything is fine
This is the good stuff
Yesterday's only what you leave behind
It's only in your mind

You gotta talk to the One who made you
Talk to the One who understands
Talk to the One who gave you all the light in your eyes
All the light in your eyes

No use pretending
You never existed until you saw the light
You're just beginning
You never missed it, it's all ahead of you
And you know what to do

You gotta talk to the One who made you
Talk to the One who understands
Talk to the One who gave you all the light in your eyes
All the light in your eyes

Here comes the world and she is beautifully mysterious
She's got it all and you say 'give it to me'

Nobody's happy
That's not the world I know inside
Everybody hides

You gotta talk to the One who made you
Talk to the One who understands
Talk to the One who gave you all the light in your eyes
All the light in your eyes

You gotta talk to the One who loves you
Talk to the One who understands
Talk to the One who gave you all the light in your eyes
All the light in your eyes

Yeah, thank you thank you!
Yeah, everything great and small
Yeah, thank you thank you!
For the light in your eyes
For the light in your eyes

Yes Lord. Thank You indeed. :O)

Up for Discussion:New Kids on the Block's "Single" featuring Ne-Yo- Toya

1. Ok, ok, I like the song. It has been growing on me. I mean, I LOVE Ne-Yo and well, I do love me some Old Men in the Club. It's not bad.
2. Sooooooo, I take it Kim Kardashian was booked, maybe? Isn't this somewhat reminiscent of the VERY first Please Don't Go Girl video where all of them are trying to talk to the same brown girl. Anyone? Anyone?
3. They looks good. Yes, looks. Tell the truth and shame the devil fellow BGLU's: NKOTB aside, if a dude that looked like Jordan tried to roll up on you in the line at Starbucks or if a guy that looked like Joey tried to holla at you at Whole Foods, you could be persuaded. And if a guy that looked like Donnie tried to holla at you at, well the club obviously...you get my point.
4. Donnie tried to riff. Still funny.
5. *Sigh* It's times like this that I miss Arsenio Hall.

Toya's Random Ramblings
  1. I haven't blogged in a while and it's because I have been a bit on the private side. Also, I haven't really had the time. One thing I am trying desperately to learn to do is to make time for EVERYTHING and there is a lot of everything to make time for. I feel like I am in over my head sometimes. This past week I heard my mentor give an interview about how she had been in 5 different cities in 5 days, is on so many boards, currently working with at least 4 different high profile artists, and still has time to be a mom and a girlfriend.  I am juggling significantly less. I am trying my best (sometimes succeeding and at times struggling) to do all things with joy which leads me to my next point.
  2. Being a Christian is hard. It really is. I don't mean hard because of what some may think of what you can't do. I mean because of the things that you are supposed to do. For instance, I must treat people with kindness and esteem them higher than myself. Do you know how hard that is?  And to think, so many of us want to be married and yet we can't treat perfect strangers with kindness. I have picked up a part time job (cause you know, I don't already have enough to do) and I run into some crazy customers. I have one lady who I am super patient with even though she causes me to have to close my register a half hour late because she cannot decide on what clothes to buy.  Why am I so patient with her? Because I understand insecurity and try to be compassionate about it. Her insecurity however frightens the hell out of me.  On top of that she is a psychiatrist.  My point is, I have received an awesome amount of grace in my life and am more aware of God's patience now more than ever before. How can I not extend that to someone else?  THAT mess is HARD.  Contrary to the belief of some, I am not patient towards people because I am some type of saint. I am because I know deep down I am the complete opposite.
  3. Tags, needy boys and the like- I was going to write about the official end of the Tag saga (the original and 3.0) which ended with a highly emotional blowout but I just don't have it in me tonight. What I will say is this: My friend Melanie has said that you keep learning the lesson until you have learned the lesson. I can stand and say I have learned the lesson so much so that I smell "needy boys" a mile away.  I had someone from my past rear their ugly head and I had to cut them off at the knees. Why? Because he missed the cut off for Needy Boy season. It's a wrap and we have no more room on the bench. No second string, no standbys, we're done here.
  4. Marriage- I know someone who has filed for divorce. Thing is, he is a great guy. He is a great guy making a huge mistake. I laugh at these women that judge single women because they are not married yet.  I know in my case, women that have done this to me are either not in the happiest of marriages or went through hell to have a happy marriage because they didn't do it in the proper timing.  Marriage is a serious commitment meaning I accept your current crazy and your future crazy. Yeah, I'm good.
  5. Diet Coke- I tried. I am "on" Coke Zero.  Baby steps...
  6. Celebrity tragedies: Bernie Mac- Don't think it's hit me yet. Kinda like Luther, he just "went away for a awhile". Travis- I love me some Travis Barker. LOVE me some Travis Barker. I seriously don't know how I... never mind. Don't even want to think about it.
  7. Clay Aiken- did he even really have to come out?  Clay Aiken being gay  is like "you understood" in English class. It doesn't need to be said. Kind of like... never mind. I won't out anyone. I'm no Wendy Williams.
  8. Just once I would like to be able to sit through a new rap song on my radio and not feel emotionally raped. I play this game in my car when I am bored to see if I can get through a song without wanting to veer off the side of the road.   I haven't won yet.
  9. The election- I am not going to get into who I think anyone should vote for but I will say this: if you run your campaign ugly, I firmly believe you will run your presidency ugly for one. Second, if you don't like either candidate and don't want to vote for either one look at it this way: you can always vote AGAINST the one you like the least. Either way, get your vote on. If you can vote 12 times in a row for David Cook on American Idol, surely you can vote in the upcoming election.
  10. Am I seriously the only person that detests MIA's "Paper Planes"? I mean, I hate it like it's "Laffy Taffy". I don't get it.
* I wanted to make this a list of ten but I must mention this: I officially am crazy about Kings of Leon. The new album? Crazy. However, I don't think it beats the one before it. If you're not down, you may want to get down. I'm just sayin'.
I need to know that you watched...-Tia

The New Kids On The Block Behind The Music.

I mean, I just saw a clip for Dirty Dawg. I haven't seen that in YEARS!!!

And I never realized that Danny was so short. I mean, I knew he was short but I didn't know he was that short. Maybe it's the camera angle...

Anyway, this is taking me all the way back. I can't wait for the concert next month.

The Playlist - Tia
I am still feeling out The Block and thus do not have an opinion yet. I will say I LURVE Grown Man but something about it almost makes me feel dirty for liking it so much. As soon as I have an opinion though, I will share it.

I've been in a weird mood lately so my music tastes have been all over the map. Here are a few selections that have been on repeat for the last couple of weeks.

John Legend - Green Light
I can not stop listening to this song. I love it. It was so...unexpected. I love the fact that he stepped out and did something different. Oh and pay attention to the track at the end of the video. It's called Good Morning and I have on good authority that it's going to be a single. And it was written by this guy. (Don't say we don't hip you to stuff.)

The Veronicas - Untouched
I have no idea how long this song has been out. Someone told me that it was on So You Think You Can Dance (which is an excruciatingly long title to have to type.) I don't watch the show with any sort of regularity because I can't really dance and resent people who can. But anyway, I saw a clip of the video when I was watching The N (shut it!!) and went directly to iTunes and downloaded it. I'm going to have to look these girls up.

Laura Izibor
Who knew that Dublin had brown soul singers? I love this chick. I will skip the comparisons. But I will say that I find her more pop-y than Alicia Keys and a little more soulful than Corrine Bailey Rae. Honestly, I think this girl will be a star in her own right. She's can tap into the full band, horn section, soul singer thing. Give Shine a listen and you'll see what I mean.

Greg Laswell
I heard Greg Laswell's What A Day at the end of some show I was watching and I wrote down the lyrics so that I could google the song. Then How The Day Sounds came on the cd that came with my Paste magazine. I found it too coincidental that he would pop up back to back like that so I took a trip over to his myspace page. I can't put my finger on it but I find a lot of his tracks comforting. Very autumn at a coffee shop with a macbook. His version of Girls Just Want To Have Fun is a grower. I had to listen to it a few times to appreciate his slower tempo, piano driven take on the song. Overall though, I like him and I have a feeling he's going to be in my playlist a lot this fall.

M.I.A. - Paper Planes
I'm still trying to decide if I like this song. I was surfing OnDemand one night and decided to watch the video for Paper Planes. This chick's name kept popping up on random blogs that I lurk on so I figured I'd give her a shot. I seriously don't know if I like it. I'm definitely intrigued by it but I don't know if I have an opinion on it. How weird is that? But I keep listening to it. So maybe I like it and I just don't know it.

Little Jackie
Okay, I'm such a Southern Girl. And I used to think that if I had to pick a coast it would be the west coast. But the east coast is really trying to win my heart. If I had to have an East Coast theme song, Little Jackie's Stoop would be it right now.

As is normally the case, I was watching VH1Soul one morning and the Little Jackie video came on. Honestly, I found the song a little trite. But for some reason I thought the girl in the song looked familiar. After a little digging I realized that it was Imani Coppola. Remember this girl:

(I drove my college roommate NUTS with this song. I listened to it every day for about a month.)

Nostalgia outweighed my dislike for Little Jackie's current single and I found myself listening to tracks on their myspace page. Stoop is my current favorite and the cheekiness of Black Barbie is not lost on me.

I'm quite tired all of a sudden so I'm going to crash. But I leave you with this question: I am the only person the on the planet who DOESN'T like Black Kids? Maybe I just need to hear more songs or something...

Everybody can't sing Queen - Tia

Okay first off work has been ridiculous. I am soooo looking for a new job. My apologies for being M.I.A....Moving on.

I'm a fan of Queen. Freddie Mercury was THE BUSINESS. I have the Queen box set and run it on the regular. That being said, I'm something of a Queen snob. I usually am not a fan when people try to sing Queen songs.
This here I'm fine with:

Most people don't have the tone or the range to pull it off. This was no exception. In my humble opinion, this should not have happened. I know they're trying to promote an album and upcoming tour but heavens to megatroid this was awful. Okay, maybe not awful but not great. Joey was struggling. Like I said, everybody can't sing Queen.

I was going to blog about the VMA's but they were SOOOO bad and I am SO pissed off that I seriously can't bring myself to comment on it.-Toya

Wait, I do have this though and then I will shut up...

If it's really all about pro-choice then why are people ridiculed when they make the choice to just not have sex in the first place?

Ok, I have calmed down now.

I don't think that Jordin chose her words wisely because if you do choose to have sex before marriage, that does not make you a slut. I doubt that is what she meant but I can see it being perceived that way. I pray she gets no backlash but ya know.  Interesting enough, THAT GUY (who the host will be referred to as because I still have no idea who or what his name is) suddenly started saying all of this spiritual stuff at the end.  It's funny how one can make a personal choice to do something based on their own beliefs and not judging anyone but themselves and this becomes intimidating to others. I do understand Jordin being so mad that she couldn't hold it in. I was mad the minute THAT GUY came out with a fake promise ring insinuating he took it after having sex with one of the Jonas Brothers.

A friend of mine has suggested time and time again that I start a virginity movement and that is soooo not my thing. I am not trying to be the poster girl for that. What I do encourage others to do is make wise choices. It is hard for anyone to make wise choices when you are ridiculed for not following the crowd.  *Coming down off the soapbox now*

Ok, I DID manage to come up with a few things...

  • I love that they are giving Britney a chance to redeem herself and by love I mean, I wonder what Janet is doing at the house right now. Remember, she put out an album last year too. I'm just saying.
  • Sooooooo really Rihanna opened the VMA's and not Britney. Just as well. I think she is proof that you don't have to be distasteful to be popular. Does anyone not love Rihanna? She reminds me of some 80's artists I loved like Kim Wilde.  One of the few artists out that don't annoy me at all. AND she is beast! What she puts out a single every 2 weeks?
  • Either I am really old or really out of touch (Or both, fine) because I have zero clue who this host is. I don't even know who this guy was in the beginning with Britney.
  • I'm bored already so let's talk about men in skinny jeans. Why?
  • I was holding my breath the entire time the host (still don't know his name) was talking about The Jonas Brothers being virgins.  I mean...
  • I am so confused by this show.
  • Is Jamie Foxx telling people to wake up because the host (WHO IS THAT GUY) was so bad. ?
  • Britney won. She looks like nothing ever happened.
  • TRAVIS!!!!! TRAVIS!!!!!! Flutter, flutter...
  • Attention: THE HILLS IS NOT REAL!!! Thank you for your time.
  • This VMA trivia during the commercials is genius.
  • Speechless after the Paris Hilton BFF commercial. Speechless.
  • This is the WORST VMA'S already and it hasn't even been an hour yet.
  • YEEEAAAAAH!!!!!! Little Chris Brown won!!!!!!!!!
  • Why has the Jonas Brothers' virginity been the brunt of most of THIS GUY's jokes?
  • All the Jonas Brothers are missing is Oscar the Grouch. Wait, they aren't on Sesame Street? Where is the Count? "One Jonas Brother, hahahaha" As Bobby just said, the VMA's have been brought to you by the number 3. I don't hate the song at all though.
  • Kid Rock AND Lil Wayne performing together??? What did I do wrong that I deserved this? I would like to apologize to everyone.
  • My bad. Leona Lewis, Kid Rock and Lil Wayne. Lord please show me the error of my ways.
  • Lil Wayne just slithered out. Lord please no one throw water on him lest he multiply.
  • Lil' Wayne AND T-Pain!!!!??? My eyes, MY EYES!!!
  • YEAH Fanny Pack!!!!!
  • I seriously don't even want to watch this anymore. This is so terrible.
  • That child from Paramore can SING! This is the only performance I have liked.
  • And yet another joke about the Jonas Brothers virginity.
  • OKAY Jordin Sparks! Ever get so mad and riled up over something someone has said that you can't breathe? I will refrain from the No Air jokes because she did NOT look happy at all.
  • Did Christina figure that since Britney wasn't going to come out and be Britney then she would gladly take that spot?
  • I have never heard of Tokio Hotel before tonight.

  • And this is where I checked out for the night because I was pissed about all the chastity jokes. I mean, so mad I can't even clown Kid Rock so you KNOW I beside myself. Talk amongst yourselves...
